Diabetes Screening

86 million. That’s how many people have prediabetes in the United States right now according to the American Diabetes Association. Prediabetes often does not have any symptoms, and many don’t know they have it.

Prediabetes is a condition where the sugar in your blood (your blood glucose level) is elevated, but not to the point you have a clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. (Type 1 diabetes is not due to lifestyle or diet and occurs in 5% of diabetes patients – mostly in children and young adults.)

Prediabetes and diabetes is a common, yet serious condition, because if left untreated or unmanaged it could lead to serious health problems.

It’s important to get screened for diabetes.

Lab tests for diabetes screening

If you or a doctor want to check and see if you’re at risk for prediabetes, or if you have diabetes, here are several blood tests that may be recommended according to the American Diabetes Association. Test Smartly Labs can help with any of these blood draws you may need:

  • A1C – checks average blood glucose for the past 2-3 months
  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) – no eating or drinking at least 8 hours before the test
  • Plasma Glucose Test – tests blood glucose at any time of the day

The good news is prediabetes can be reversed with lifestyle changes.
