DOT Pre-Employment Testing

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHA) reports,

“Under Executive Order 12564, all federal employees involved in ‘law enforcement, national security, the protection of life and property, public health or safety, or other functions requiring a high degree of public trust’ are subject to mandatory drug testing.

DOT employees perform “safety-sensitive functions”. In other words, from the time an operator starts work (or is required to be “on call”) until they clock out, they must follow the rules and regulations of the DOT.

Pre-employment drug testing for DOT positions

DOT drug testing is a routine part of the hiring process, and it all starts before the job is even officially offered with pre-employment drug testing.

Whether someone is applying to drive a bus, fly a plane or operate a rail car, a clean DOT drug test is required to have on file.

Drug testing is mandatory for pre-employment, but agencies differ in how they handle alcohol pre-employment screening. Refer to the individual rules and regulations for the individual DOT agencies.
